How do I install a digital decoder in a marklin model locomotive? Question: Marklin in Germany make AC (alternating current) 3 rail model trains. Electronics now play a big part of model railways and these locomotives have and can have tiny PCB's (printed circuit boards) known as decoders installed in them. The AC decoders for marklin do not come with a plug and socket like DC trains, - I would like to know how to A. test a faulty decoder and change a faulty decoder over and B. Install a decoder into a model that does not yet have one. if there is demo I can download that would be perfect? Answer: This is probably a better question for a hobbies board. Or the following links: http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a.tcl?topic=Wirin g+for+DCC http://www.modelrailroadnews.com/pages/april2004.htm l |

Are Japanese "Pro Z" Model Trains Compatible With Marklin & Micro-Trains? Question: Hi Folks, Will Japanese Tokyo Marui "Pro Z" model trains operate on Marklin z-scale track using a Marklin transformer? Will Marklin and Micro-Trains equipment operate on the "Pro Z" modular z-scale layout? I don't care if the couplers are not compatible. Here are 2 eBay auctions (which do not address compatibility): 120364420697 200310194327 Anyone bought any of these Japanese trains or the layout? Do they work well? Thanks! - Paul Answer: There are some differences. The Pro-Z trains use a custom power supply that allows the illuminated passenger coaches to work; they may not light up right with a Marklin power supply. Conversely, the Pro Z power supply may cause Micro-Trains and Marklin locos to run strangely because of the power for the lighting. It should not cause harm, but it might cause humming, and locos may run warmer than normal. Although you said couplers don't matter, just to set the record straight, Marklin, Micro-Trains and Pro-Z all use different couplers that are not compatible. |

How does one tell what gauge of Marklin one has? Question: how do you tell what gauge model railroad is? Answer: Gauge is the distance between the rails, so just measure the inside distance. You probably mean what Scale (reduction from the real thing) you have. I'm using US information because that's what I'm most familiar with. Other countries had similar situations even if measurements differed. G Gauge (various scale reductions run on this track) Marklin uses 1/32 -- gauge 45 mm O 1/48 1/4" = 1 foot -- gauge 32 mm HO 1/87 3.5 mm = 1 foot -- gauge 16.5 mm N 1/160 -- gauge 9 mm Z 1/220 This distinction between scale and gauge is important because not all real trains were built to the same gauge. In the US after about 1870 almost all railroads were built to standard gauge (4 feet, 8 1/2 inches) but some were wider (the Erie was 6 feet), some narrower. Most narrow gauge railroads were 3 foot gauge, some (mainly in New England) were 2 foot gauge. Some industrial railroads were even narrower. Assuming your models are standard gague, if you measure the gauge it will tell you what scale they are (see the list above). Marklin has made many scales of trains, but currently they're making only HO, Z, and G. So measure the track, and you'll probably know what scale you have. |

I am a model train enthusiast and am just starting the hobby. I have a Roco HO model train set and wonder if I Question: can can purchase other brand (other makes, eg Marklin, Hornby, etc) and attach to my set? I really would appreciate some advice. Thanks Answer: yes, all standard HO brands will interchange and run with each other..... the only exceptions are some of the more expensive types such as brass imports and/or custom / craftsman type kits, but at your entry level, they are too expensive and not something you will be buying anyway. all standard, out of the box brands will run together on any set |

What do you get the Model Train Enthusiast who has everything? Question: He really has everything, it's always so difficult to buy him a gift because he either has everything, I don't know the hobby as well as him so I'll probably buy him something he doesn't want, or if there's a wagon or kit or something he wants you can be sure it's on its way to him in the mail already.. What can I get him that isn't a model train or something to add to his layout that will still appeal to him? He even has a canvas shopper with the Marklin logo on it, I can't even get him that!! I thought of a cap or a tshirt, but what should the tshirt say? Is there somewhere I can get vintage railway stuff? I once bought him a set of retro magnets with photographs of old trains on them.. He specialises in Marklin.. Answer: I know why you are asking this. My wife has tried, but she does not know what to get! So, let me help you by making suggestions about what I [the person with everything train related] would like from someone who knows me and my passion for trains & railroading: - I have found T shirts, pins & caps of some of my favorite railroads and tourist lines fun to wear while out botching around - some neat magnets for the fridge of my favorite railroads - signs of favorite railroads - my wife got me a picture, framed and all [about 18 X 30"] of a nice steam engine scene - some neat train & railroad related calendars are fun - little gift type things that hang on wall, railroad related - coffee cups of favorite railroads OK, here, go the these websites and see if any of this tickles your fancy: http://www.railroadcatalog.com/ http://www.classicrail.c om/store.html http://www.zazzle.com/rail+road+gifts http://www. everythingrailroads.com/railroads/ Sounds like you are in Europe somewhere, and most of these are USA stuff, but these will at least get you started, and you'll find something for this person whom has 'everything'! [Can't have 'everything', really!] |

Great for him and helps support local business. |
