A popular weapon of the time, before the M4 carbine and the current M16A3 and M16A4 models and the introduction of the M203 "shorty" used with the M4 carbine. EDIT: Just looked it up. You're right - the M16A1 was fully automatic, but did not support the M203 attachment. The M16A2 supported the M203 attachment, but used a three-round burst setup instead of fully automatic. This was because they replaced the trigger group of the M16A1 with a newer trigger group that only permitted three rounds to be fired per trigger pull, although they had problems with the trigger group failing to reset if you pulled the trigger again before the three round burst was finished. This is probably why the original trigger group for automatic fire was used again in the next generation (M16A3). The M16A3 was introduced at the same time (roughly) as the M16A2, and featured a fully automatic trigger group in addition to supporting the M203 attachment. The M16A4 is the newest model of the M16, which returned to a three-round burst (and is why the M16A3 is still in service) and added the newer pictanny rails for modular addons (including a reworked M203). So, to properly answer your question since I was in error the first time. Arnold used an M16A3 rifle with an over/under M203 long-barrel grenade launcher. |
