How can I work out the grade required to raise a model railway track 7 inches? Question: I want to raise a track from my model train layout, 6 inches. How do I work out the best gradient. Thanks. Col Paton Answer: you can use porportions and then cross multiply. cars use 6 percent, and railroads less, 2 to 4 max, figure it life size then convert it to scale. First convert inches to engineers foot, 7 inches equals 0.58 feet to make things simpler. for 2 is to 100 as 0.58 is to x, solve for x. 2x=58 x=29 ft |

Is there some special tool I can buy or is there another way? Answer: Your local hobby shop can sell you a Track Cutter, not cheap but it makes a smooth cut. Is dirt track racing (Late model, mods, etc...) some of the safer oval track racing? Question: I have always heard that late models are some of the safest type of race cars. I was just curious, after watching several races I have not seen one wreck, so I do not have a personal experience on this. What about the other dirt track cars, are they safe? What is the standard track size for a HO Model Train? Question: I have been given a size HO model train as a birthday present and I would like to build a model railroad in my garden. I am a newbie and I want to start buying materials but I have no idea what size track to buy. I would like to know what is the standard size track for a size HO model train? Answer: Model Railroad TRACK has three primary measurements: 1) Scale - is the ratio of the model to the real thing: in HO scale, the model is 1:87 the model is 1/87th the size of the real thing 2) Gauge - Gauge is the distance between the rails, and the standard gauge in North America is 4' 8 ½". (that means in HO scale, the rails are 0.649 inches (16.5 mm). 3) Code - is the height of the rails. Mainline rails are taller than spur and yard rails. In HO, the two primary "code" sizes are 83 and 100. HO railroading isn't particularly given to outdoor use. Here is a link to the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA), the US standards group, which has great information: http://www.nmra.org/ |

How do you clean model train track? Question: I just got lots of used track that I am using for a large digital layout that is really dirty. How should I do it? Answer: If it dusty, use compressed air to blow off the dust. If the tracks have a build up on them, I have used an eraser to remove it, and a q-tip with alcohol to remove the stuff from the tight areas. |
