who were the team or craftsman behind the building of the massive cathedrals? Question: facinating building and vastly huge.... where did all the skills and knowledge come from? Answer: Not an easy question to answer. Most of the great cathedrals were built over many years - sometimes even generations. This means that there was never one mind or team of minds behind their construction - different people were responsible for different stages of construction. |

I need a wood craftsman: how do I find someone? Question: I'm an artist with an idea for a jewelry box (or something very close to it). I'm hoping I can find a skilled carpenter/craftsman to build it for me. How do I even go about doing this? Is there a special term besides carpenter/craftsman for this type of person that I should be aware of? Answer: Check with a local woodworking guild/club, Rockler or Woodcraft stores. They will normally be plugged into to people who can do this for you. It also depends a lot of whether you need one made or 1000 a month. As someone who does this type of thing a suggestion I have is to get your design complete. The people you are going to work with are more engineering than artists and you will waste or pay for a lot of their time if you go in with ideas that can only be described by hand waving and "kind of likes." Also be open to their ideas on how it should be constructed from the technical aspects. |

My Craftsman air compressor is leaking & wont hold pressure I think reg is leaking How do I find out for sure? Question: I hear air coming from the regulator area but I am unsure about whether it is the regulator or the gauges or.... Sears, of course, doesn't provide any help. They just want you to buy all new parts on trial and error. There is not a parts department within 120 miles of my home. Dewalt offers a regulator repair kit. Sears does not. Does anybody know who builds the air compressors for Craftsman. Maybe I can get a repair kit from them. Help!!! Answer: Mix some liquid soap with some water and while air compressor is running pour water on connections and any where there could be a possible leak. You'll see air bubbles where ever the leak is with the soapy water mixture. Then repair what ever is leaking. |

Are Craftsman tools over-rated? If so, what is the best tool brand to buy for an average joe like me? Question: Are Craftsman tools over-rated? If so, what is the best tool brand to buy for an average joe like me? I'm an average guy who wants to get a tool collection together, but I'm not in construction nor do I do repair work/build things every weekend. What's a good brand for a guy me who wants their tools to last for years? Answer: That is a pretty BIG question. I can not say that ONE single brand is best for all tools. What you have to consider is what are you buying the tools for. For example: a hand held Circular Saw I would recommend a "Skill Saw" brand. best for the money. The best model is the worm drive but it is more expensive more saw than the homeowner needs. But now if you go to battery operated tools I like Ryobi for myself as well as the homeowner. very versatile interchangeable and they hold up. Good value for the money. On the other hand if you are talking about wrenches I like Craftsman. As for power tools they are OK I don't think they are that much better than Delta for example. Shop-smith makes a great product too but I think it is a bit pricey. Shop around for power tools and buy what you think has the features you want in your price range. The right tool for the right job. |

Remodeling a Craftsman style house, anyone who is familiar with this style please help? Question: I recently bought a house that was built in 1928. It has a definite Art Deco/Craftsman/Arts & Crafts feel. I would like to restore as much as possible true to this design period. I specifically like styles such as William Morris and Frank Lloyd Wright. Any tips --especially websites, catalogs, and stores from which I could purchase original or reproduction pieces-- would be most appreciated. Answer: Restoration Hardware has a great selection of furniture, accessories, hardware, lighting, etc. that fit that style perfectly. www.restorationhardware.com |
